Pierre Poutre dit Lavigne

Pierre was the son of Antoine Poutre, a farmer,  and Marie Lagesse (Dagesse). He was born on February 22 and baptized February 23, 1824 at St Cyrien de Napierville, Napierville, Quebec, Canada. His god paents were Pierre Lagesse and Monique Houle.

Pierre and Esther Vachereau were married on October 28 1856 at St Bernard de Lacolle, St Jean, Quebec, Canada. Pierre was 32 yrs old and Marie was 25. Those present at the wedding were Antoine Poutre, the father of the groom and Joseph Vacherault, the father of the bride.

Esther Vachereau was the daughter of Joseph Vachereau, a farmer, and Seraphine Gagne. She was born on November 20 and baptized on November 21, 1831 at St Phillipe de Laprairie, Laprarie, Quebec, Canada. Her godparents were Joseph Babeu and Josephte Poissant.

Pierre was the first Poutre dit Lavigne to come from Canada into the United States. He entered into New York State and settled in Cohoes, NY.  His surname was Poutre dit Lavigne in Canada and after entering Cohoes, it gradually changed from Poutre dit Lavigne to just Lavigne. It is estimated that Pierre came to the United States sometime in 1871.

He is listed on the Lacolle, Canadian 1871 census with his wife and his first 6 children - Marie Elizabeth, Pierre Uldaric, Marie Delia, Israel, George (my Grandfather), and Joseph. After moving to Cohoes, Pierre and Esther had 4 more children - Mena, Marie Adeline, Esma and Henri.

In the 1880 federal census, Pierre is listed at living at 2 Garner St. On the census, the family is listed as: Peter (55), Ester (480, Elizabeth (22), John (Dore) (20), Delia (18), Jerry (Israel) (14), George (10), Mena (8), and Esma (5).In the 1880 census, the Poutre family is listed as living at 2 Garner Street, Cohoes. they were  Peter (55), Ester (48), Eliabeth (22), John (Dore) (20, Delia (18), Jerry (Israel) (14, George (10), Mena (8) and Esma.

Esther died June 8, 1894 at the age of 62 at 27 Garner Street, Cohoes. Her death diagnosis was apoplexy. She was buried on June 11, 1894 at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Waterford, NY.


Pierre died June 3, 1901 at the age of 77 at 27 Garner Street, Cohoes. His death diagnosis was complication of disease (? what disease that was). He was buried on June 5, 1901 at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Waterford, NY. Both Pierre and Esther are buried in their grandson's, Armand Reneau, plot  at St. Joseph's.


By the time that Pierre and Esther died, most of the children had married and lived elsewhere in Cohoes.
