Pierre and Esther Vachereau were married on October 28 1856 at St Bernard de Lacolle, St Jean, Quebec, Canada. Pierre was 32 yrs old and Marie was 25. Those present at the wedding were Antoine Poutre, the father of the groom and Joseph Vacherault, the father of the bride.
Esther Vachereau was the daughter of Joseph Vachereau, a farmer, and Seraphine Gagne. She was born on November 20 and baptized on November 21, 1831 at St Phillipe de Laprairie, Laprarie, Quebec, Canada. Her godparents were Joseph Babeu and Josephte Poissant.
Pierre was the first Poutre dit Lavigne to come from Canada into the United States. He entered into New York State and settled in Cohoes, NY. His surname was Poutre dit Lavigne in Canada and after entering Cohoes, it gradually changed from Poutre dit Lavigne to just Lavigne. It is estimated that Pierre came to the United States sometime in 1871.
He is listed on the Lacolle, Canadian 1871 census with his wife and his first 6 children - Marie Elizabeth, Pierre Uldaric, Marie Delia, Israel, George (my Grandfather), and Joseph. After moving to Cohoes, Pierre and Esther had 4 more children - Mena, Marie Adeline, Esma and Henri.
